MOUTAIN VIEW COUNTY - Mountain View County will provide more than $40,000 for several capital maintenance projects in Carstairs, including for a new columbarium in the town.
The funds will come from the inter-municipal collaboration capital reserve under the ICF shared facilities sub agreement between the municipalities.
The county’s percentage of population in the Carstairs recreation area is 27 per cent. As per policy and procedure, the total request for financial contribution for the three projects is $41,418.
The projects being funded are CrossFit wall at the Carstairs Memorial Arena ($40,000 total cost), Olympia laser level ($23,400 total cost), and the construction of a new columbarium ($90,000 total cost).
A columbarium is a structure for the reverential storage of urns holding cremated remains.
Regarding the columbarium project, a Carstairs official said in a note to the county, that, “We currently have 19 columbarium niches that have not been reserved as of December 30, 2024. A new columbarium will add more space, as our columbarium niches have been selling faster than full burial plots.
The costs will include the columbarium, freight, placement, all doors to be pre-frilled for monument installs, extra doors, and a concrete base.
Regarding the CrossFit wall project, the town noted that, “Due to ongoing issues with water leaking in the facility from the area where the wall meets the glass wall, we need to remove the glass wall, replace it with two pony walls, add new windows, and upgrade the barrier where the two walls meet to stop water leaking into the facility. We will also add a slope away from the building wall so sitting moisture isn’t possible.”
Regarding the Olympia laser level, the town said, "The laser levelling system takes all the guesswork of producing a perfectly level sheet of ice. The laser-controlled ice levelling system provides an accurate reference point within 0.05mm.
“The system is automatic; therefore, the ice maintenance is continually maintained with each flood. Edging can be reduced to twice a week. Our energy bill will be dramatically reduced because you can maintain the ice at a reduced thickness resulting in less load on your compressors, condenser, and dehumidifier and less energy use.”
