MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY – Council has approved updates to the municipality’s Naming of County Roads policy and the related procedure to include subdivisions.

The move came by way of motion at the recent regularly scheduled council meeting, held in person and online with all councillors in attendance.

Policy No. 4002 currently provides guidelines towards the formal naming of county roads.

“As new subdivisions are developed and subsequently named, the county does not currently have guidelines outlining how those names are selected,” said Chris Atchison, director of legislative services.

“As such, after review of best practices from other municipalities, administration has amended Policy No. 4002 and accompanying procedure No. 4002-01 to recommend guidelines for council’s consideration as to how the naming process will work for subdivisions.

The new guidelines for naming subdivisions include the following:

• The name shall not be duplicated, similar sounding or phonetically similar to any subdivision within Mountain View County or adjacent municipality. New subdivisions located adjacent to or in proximity to existing subdivisions may be granted the same, or similar, name in council’s discretion.

• Names of persons of honour, community importance or of historical significance in Mountain View County should be used where appropriate. Recognition of these persons shall not be restricted to only county residents, but may be extended to include persons who have made a significant contribution at a provincial, national or international level.

• Names shall be determined and applied in accordance with the specific requirements set out in these guidelines and procedures. Approval of subdivision names shall be by council and may be considered after re-designation approval before subdivision approval.

• All requests to name a subdivision shall be submitted to county administration for internal circulation, review and preparation of a report and recommendations to council for approval.

• Subdivision naming requests corresponding with a proposed subdivision should be submitted with the initial subdivision application.

• In the absence of proposed names for the subdivision, administration may select names and then prepare recommendations to be forwarded to council for approval.

• Costs for supply, installation and future maintenance of the signage shall be borne by the applicant(s) and included as part of the conditional approval of subdivision, unless otherwise directed by council.
