SUNDRE – High school students from throughout the region took part on Wednesday, May 14 in the county senior track meet hosted at Sundre High School.
McKenzie McElhinney, Sundre high’s new athletic director, said the event was a qualifier for the upcoming zones in Calgary, which take place this coming week on Wednesday, May 21.
From there, the top-ranked athletes will get an opportunity to compete in provincials, which also take place in Calgary on June 6-7.
The county track and field meet in Sundre ran smoothly under sunny skies and Sundre High School was proud to host the annual event, McElhinney said.
“Athletes from six schools – Sundre High School, Olds High School, Olds Koinonia Christian School, Didsbury High School, Carstairs High School, and Cremona School – came together for an action-packed day of competition,” she said.
“Sundre High School dominated the event, finishing first in overall points thanks to a strong showing from their senior athletes. With an impressive 45 students competing from grades 10-12, SHS led the charge in both participation and performance.”
Meanwhile, Sundre will once again be welcoming the region’s top young athletes when it hosts another event later this week on Thursday, May 22 with the county junior track meet set to take place for grades 7-9.
McElhinney encourages anyone who is able to come out and cheer on all of the athletes.
