SUNDRE – The community celebration for Canada Day has a jam-packed itinerary loaded with family-friendly activities.

Everything gets started early on July 1 with a pancake breakfast at 8:30 a.m. hosted by the Sundre Citizens on Patrol Association on the lot east of the Elks Lodge No. 338 ,next to the Sundre and District Museum.

Once people have fuelled up on flap jacks and syrup, they’ll have the opportunity to walk over to the Sundre museum’s pioneer village at no cost from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with admissions to the World of Wildlife exhibit available by donation.

Carrie Couch, the museum’s executive director, said there will be some heritage games along with “lots of red and white to make this celebration such great fun, but the significance in the day is truly appreciated through the formal flag raising” and made all the more special by the participation of members from the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #223 in Sundre.

The traditional flag raising ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m., followed shortly afterward by the free barbecue hosted by the municipal council, starting at 11:30 a.m. After lunch will be a Canada Day cake cutting with mayor and council at 1 p.m.

Tim Hus and Band will in the meantime be performing from noon to 2 p.m. at the pioneer village’s outdoor stage.

Residents are reminded that no pets are allowed on the museum grounds with the exception of service animals.

The Canada Day fun will then continue behind Sundre High School where the Sundre Fire Department teamed up with Greenwood Neighbourhood Place to organize an all-ages bucket brigade race at ball diamond No. 3 adjacent to the rodeo grounds from 3-5 p.m.

Teams of six will have to test their mettle as they attempt to transfer water from a starting bucket to an empty bucket at the end of the line, with the first team to fill their bucket or reach a designated level declared the winners.

Once the races wrap up, everyone is invited to bring their own packed supper along with blankets and chairs to get cozy for a picnic at the ball diamonds, followed afterward with a variety of fun activities for the family as well as entertainment from 7-9 p.m.

Bree Odd, GNP’s executive director, said there will be a kids’ karaoke, a colouring contest, glow bracelets as well as glitter tattoos and more.

Wrapping up the busy day is a fireworks display at dusk, depending of course on the weather or adherence to fire restrictions or bans.

The Canada Day community celebration is a result of the collaborative effort among the municipality, the Sundre and District Historical Society, Greenwood Neighbourhood Place and the Sundre Fire Department.
