LETTER: Absolute power corrupts absolutely

"Do we tell pilots, doctors and dentists what they can do? Does a patient tell a doctor how to operate? A corporal telling the generals what to do?" asks letter writer
opinion

Under Bill 50, the provincial government plans to “unilaterally” eliminate “codes of conduct” for municipal governments.

We seem to have gone down this same road before with our former minister of education and ex-minister of health.

Rule by decree, eh? Remember the adage: “Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely."

We seem to have a provincial government that doesn’t listen to the majority of citizens: granting coal mining on the Eastern Slopes; supporting private health over public health (is it true that we can obtain quick surgeries if we pay directly to our doctors?); supporting private schools over public schools; allowing for the hunting of endangered species; eliminating CPP and OAS in favour of an Alberta pension plan; creating local police forces to replace our RCMP; establishing partisan politics in local affairs; etc.

It has gone after professional organizations who have punished their members for violating codes of conduct. For example, doctors having their licences revoked for spreading anti-vaccine “misinformation” (like taking horse medicine or cleaning fluids for COVID-19).

Our government is claiming that people should have a “right” to express their opinions/views without consequences under the guise of “free speech”.

Bottom line: No accountability for one’s actions.

Look at the measles epidemic in Alberta now. Who is going to be held accountable for this epidemic?

Do we tell pilots, doctors and dentists what they can do? Does a patient tell a doctor how to operate? A corporal telling the generals what to do?

Bottom line: Should our provincial government have the absolute power to disallow codes of conduct for municipal politicians, doctors, lawyers, teachers, etc?
