Olds council OKs sponsorship of two local events

Town-owned Mountain View Power will sponsor this fall's annual Oldstoberfest (Sept. 11-13) for $10,000 and Summer Synergy ( July 7-12) for $1,000

OLDS – Town council has approved two sponsorships for local events: a $10,000 Mountain View Power sponsorship for the annual Oldstoberfest and $1,000 to support the Olds Regional Exhibition’s annual Summer Synergy event.

Summer Synergy

Summer Synergy is an opportunity for youth between nine and 21 years old to demonstrate their skills in the agriculture sector at the Olds Regional Exhibition (ORE).

This year, it runs from July 7-12.

Summer Synergy was developed as a partnership between Olds Regional Exhibition (ORE), 4-H Alberta, the Calgary Stampede, and Olds College.

The event is expected to attract more than 1,700 participants and involves a variety of animals, including beef, dairy cattle, and sheep.

The Town was asked to sponsor the event this year.

In a Town document it was noted that “the Town has not traditionally sponsored this event.”

Council voted to approve a one-time $1,000 sponsorship for this year.

Oldstoberfest

Billed as the world’s only Bavarian rodeo, Oldstoberfest, hosted by the ORE, is slated to occur Sept. 11-13 this year.

Chief administrative officer Brent Williams said it’s his understanding that the Town has been sponsoring the rodeo since about 2019.

This will be third year that town-owned Mountain View Power has been the sponsor or proposed to do so.

A Town document said it’s estimated that Oldstoberfest will attract more than 8,000 people to town throughout the weekend.

The document also said the goals of the rodeo are to “maximize economic impact, increase community engagement, and showcase the Town of Olds and the County of Mountain View.”
