A St. Albert senior lost close to $100,000 over the past year through scam, according to the St. Albert RCMP.
The individual believed they were sending money to an investment platform put on by the Liberal Party. The senior clicked on a fake artificial intelligence (AI) generated “Liberal Investment Ad” on Facebook and signed up for the investment scheme.
The RCMP said after the senior signed up for the investment scam, the fraudsters would reach out and request money transfers to invest using online messaging or by phone. Months passed before family members became aware of the money transfers and realized it was a scam.
The St. Albert RCMP would like to remind the public that fraud can happen to anyone, and the individuals committing these crimes are often professional criminals with elaborate, convincing, and sophisticated scams. In 2024, Investment Fraud cost Canadians $310 million.
