Sundre Highway 27-Main Avenue detour to open Thursday evening

Vehicle size restrictions in place and motorists advised of travel delays

SUNDRE – Motorists are advised the Highway 27-Main Avenue westbound detour road through Sundre is expected to open Thursday evening.

Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors (TEC) made the announcement earlier in the week.

Staring the evening of April 3, the detour will redirect westbound drivers north on 1st Street NW and then west along 1st Avenue NW, also known as Myron Thompson Avenue, before reconnecting with Highway 27-Main Avenue over a temporary road that comes around the new Dairy Queen at approximately 5th Street.

“This detour passes through a residential area with pedestrians, so drivers must slow down, obey all posted speed limits, and remain alert,” reads part of TEC's statement.

Meanwhile, eastbound traffic will continue along Highway 27-Main Avenue as usual.

Size restrictions

TEC says to ensure a safe and efficient traffic flow, size restrictions have been put in place for both west and eastbound motorists.

Westbound (detour road - 1st Avenue NW):

• Maximum vehicle dimensions: 4-metres wide, 5.3-metres high, 45-metres long;

• Maximum wheel track width: 3.2 metres;

• Vehicles exceeding these limits must contact the contractor, PME, to schedule special accommodations.

Eastbound (Highway 27-Main Avenue):

• Maximum vehicle dimensions: 4-metres wide, 9-metres high;

• Maximum wheel track width: 5.2 metres;

• Vehicles exceeding these limits must contact PME to arrange travel.

Special accommodations for oversized vehicles:

• Oversized loads will be accommodated only on Tuesday and Thursday nights between 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.;

• Motorists must contact PME in advance to schedule a time;

• The overall maximum load limits for special accommodations are 14-metres wide, nine-metres high and six-metres wheel track width.

Drivers with vehicles exceeding the above limits must contact PME to coordinate their travel in advance. PME contact information can be found on the project website at Town of Sundre - HWY 27 Improvements.

Failure to do so may result in delays or an inability to proceed through the construction area.

Motorists are also reminded to follow posted speed limits and detour signage. Speed limits remain 30 km/h through the construction zone, and fines double in work areas.

TEC says it and the Town of Sundre appreciate the public’s patience and cooperation as they work to improve Highway 27.
