OLDS — The season is now over for some Olds Minor Lacrosse Association (OMLA) teams, but not for the U15s.
They won the league and are now getting ready for the provincials, which will be held July 11-13 in Calgary.
They’re not the only OMLA team to have success this season.
From June 20 to 22, the OMLA hosted the U13 playoffs at the Sportsplex, involving 14 teams. Red Deer won gold, but the Carstairs Chargers won silver.
And during the June 26 weekend, the U11s won gold during a tournament in Sylvan Lake.
OMLA president Joe Berreth described the season as “another great year” for the association.
In addition to hosting the U13 playoffs, the OMLA also hosted a U7-U9 season windup event at the Sportsplex.
The event featured about 400 kids on 19 U7 teams and 16 U9 teams, all members of the Central Alberta Lacrosse League (CALL).
In addition to the Olds Stingers, players came from Carstairs and as far away as Hanna.
“At U7 and U9 they don't have playoffs so we just host a full day of games for all the kids,” Berreth wrote in an email.
This year Olds had some U17 players, but not enough players to make a team, so they were combined with Carstairs Chargers players to make a team.
“We ended up changing their name to the Rivals for just this year. We played out of both towns,” Berreth wrote.
“The kids played awesome throughout the season and ended up in sixth place.”
They also got into the playoffs, held June 26 to 29 in Lacombe, but didn’t make it into the medal round.
But they “still did awesome in my books,” Berreth wrote.
