OLDS – An Olds man is facing numerous firearm-related charges after Olds RCMP executed a search warrant Thursday with the help of several other police units.
On May 29, 2025, at approximately 3 p.m., police say Olds RCMP took a male into custody after receiving information that he had an illegal handgun in his possession.
“Olds RCMP requested the RCMP Emergency Response Team and Police Dog Services to assist with a search warrant due to the nature of the call,” police said in a press release issued Saturday. “A search warrant was successfully executed, resulting in a male from inside a motorhome being taken into custody.”
Thirty-year-old Matthew Stephen Dalton, a resident of Olds, has been charged with:
• unsafe storage of a firearm;
• possession of prohibited firearm;
• unauthorized Possession of a firearm; and
• possession of a firearm when knowing possession unauthorized.
Police say he was taken before a justice of the peace, was released and is scheduled to appear at Alberta Court of Justice in Didsbury on June 16.
"Olds RCMP remains fully committed in building safer communities by working in partnership with our community as well as through investigative and enforcement efforts to achieve this goal," police said in the May 31 release. "Olds RCMP would like to thank the RCMP’s Emergency Response Team their assistance during this incident."
Meanwhile, Olds RCMP confirmed through social media that a heavy police presence in Olds the following day on Friday was for training.
"A heavy police presence may be noticed. There is no risk to the public," police noted in a May 30 social media post.
