MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY - Mountain View County has officially withdrawn from the Sundre Petroleum Operator’s Group (SPOG) board of directors and the community affairs committee.

The move came by way of motion at last week’s regularly scheduled council meeting.

Passed following an in-camera session, the motion reads: “That Mountain View County withdraw the appointment of councillors to the Sundre Petroleum Operators Group board of directors and community affairs committee immediately.”

The decision to carry the motion follows a regular review of committees of council to “ensure our efforts are making meaningful contributions for the ratepayers of Mountain View County,” Reeve Angela Aalbers told the Albertan.

“At this time, council believes that the Sundre Petroleum Operators Group (SPOG) has evolved into more of an industry group, and as such, is better governed by industry members.

“Mountain View County remains open to participating with SPOG and its industry partners when such collaboration is mutually beneficial, including initiatives such as SPOG Neighbours Day, and will provide support for emergency management preparations and responses as necessary, based on the needs and priorities set by county administration.”

Ratepayers are “always encouraged to contact their elected officials if concerns arise within their communities,” she added.

Headquartered in Olds, SPOG is a collection of oil and gas companies with operations in the district. It promotes awareness of industry activities and issues through resident visits, workshops and other activities.

Tracey McCrimmon, SPOG executive director, told the Albertan she is pleased that Mountain View County will continue to be involved in SPOG activities.
