DIDSBURY - A vote by Town of Didsbury staff failed to garner enough support to create a union local, say officials.

The certification vote for Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 417 saw 46 votes cast, with 20 voting in favour of forming the bargaining unit.

Twenty-four votes were needed to create the local.

All staff, except firefighters, were eligible to cast votes. The ballots were counted on Feb. 16.

On Sept. 5, 2024 CUPE filed a certification application seeking to be certified as a bargaining agent for Town of Didsbury employees except firefighters.

The bargaining unit applied for captured a total of 30 job classifications and 47 employees performing work within the scopes of the proposed bargaining unit.

The employees have 90 days to reapply for another vote.

“If the employees are interested in trying again, we would be open to that,” CUPE spokesperson Lou Arab told the Albertan.

Mayor Rhonda Hunter told the Albertan she has no comment on the vote results.
