RED DEER COUNTY – A man convicted of murdering his wife in his Edmonton home over a decade ago has died while serving his prison sentence in Bowden Institution.

“On May 30, 2025, Gilbert Robinson, an inmate from Bowden Institution, died while in our custody,” a Correctional Service Canada news release issued Friday said.

At the time of death, Correctional Service Canada said the inmate was 69 years old and had been serving an indeterminate sentence, which commenced on April 5, 2018.

According to court documents, a jury found Robinson guilty of second-degree murder on Jan. 27, 2018 in the April 2014 death of his wife, Gina. He was sentenced on April 5, 2018 to life in prison with no chance of parole for 13 years.

Robinson appealed his conviction, which followed the denial of his application for a mistrial, made towards the end of his trial while the jury was deliberating.

Three Court of Appeal of Alberta justices dismissed the appeal which was heard on Oct. 6, 2020.

“The Crown’s case was that the appellant had beaten his estranged wife to death with a two-by-four piece of wood. Her body was found at the bottom of the stairs in the appellant’s house, and the appellant’s position was that there was a reasonable doubt that she might have lost her balance and fallen down the stairs,” reads a portion of the memorandum of judgment filed Oct. 15, 2020 giving some background to the case.

The Supreme Court of Canada dismissed his leave for appeal in June of 2021.

Correctional Service Canada says Robinson’s next of kin have been notified of his death.

“As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) will review the circumstances," the news release said. “CSC policy requires that the police and the coroner be notified.”
